Why do you listen weird music?
Mainstream music has no secrets for me but I preffer to have other options when it comes to tastes in music. Many of my friends love Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Radiohead and Bon Jovi or they have good reasons to do so: catchy tunes, nice personal images, challenging videos.
I have nothing against other people`s tastes and really enjoy to listen these genres of music when I go out with them. Nevertheless, there are some other artists or bands coming from the underground music that during time have caught my attention.
Kashmir, Epo-555, Moi Caprice, Under Byen, Saybia, Blue Foundation, Air, Iron & Wine, Carpark North, Spleen United, Diefenbach stand no so much for big profits, huge concerts with large audiences, and extended fan base.
Classical music, pop, rock, and so on and so forth are on my playlists togheter with the new discoveries. In fact this is what I love most: to unravel new voices and talents, original rythms, genresand lyrics.
Although for some these bands would seem a bit strange and difficult to digest, they have in common a certain sense of profoundness similar to my inner state of mind and spirit. I have to acknowledge that a music like this coming out of passion rather than out of commercial reasons gives me a certain sense of satisfaction.
What kind of underground music do you listen and why we should know about it?

well, unlike u im basically only into mainstream music. in the sense that almost all the music i really enjoyed so far is - or was - mainstream. my journeys into “uncharted” lands [:P], though interesting, havent been so far highly rewarding.
however, in time i came to notice an interesting thing: there are many - or several - mainstreams: there is, first, the distinction between what is now and what was decades ago famous, then the line between what everybody knows of [say, britney or kylie] and what is mainstream for a smaller circle [ex radiohead or oasis]. and then again, there are huge differences between several “music scenes” of the world: mainly, the uk music, us of a music and “continental” music. a band like, say, arctic monkeys, can be, for a while, the best known band in england - and completely unknown in usa [such was the case with suede, btw, back in early 90s, or the stone roses in the 80s, etc]. something like white stripes is regarded, now, as the main us band - but how many ppl listen to it in europe? and so on…
my 2 cents
Futurestep, represented by only a handful of artists (Pendulum, Subfocus, DJ Fresh and a couple of others) is a sub-genre of Drum’n'Bass which itself remains pretty much an underground phenomenon. While I don’t generally like electronic music, Futurestep is awesome
Nice topic, i listen to a lot of genres, actually to many to be mentioned here, but just like you i’ve focused my musical tastes on the non-mainstream music scene.
hello Ana,
you seem to have a preference for Danish music
If you like rock, you should know Velvet Underground, the very first rock`n roll band and still controversial enough. Their music contains classic elements, as one of the band members played the violin.
Some current bands I like much are Waldeck, Karuan or Morcheeba. I always have had an affection for music with distincive features, therefore I love worldmusic.
Greetings,
Sandee
P.S. I like your blog. As a matter of fact, I was born in Romania and lived there until I was eleven years.
I usually listen to underground hip hop, mostly Romanian. even if many times some so-called artists disappoint me, there is always someone else that entertains me.
it’s good to give credits to underground music too, but let’s not forget mainstream. from time to time, they also release good songs.
a rebours,
Thanks, I discovered now Arctic Monkeys because of your comment
R,
It’s interesting to listen this futurestep. I will try it in the near future.
CSS,
I’ve noticed your tastes after I visited your blog. Most of the bands there were familiar to me. I added you on my last.fm list.
Sandee,
I’m glad that you appreciate my efforts on this blog. Indeed, Danish music I love to listen since last year and I still listen it very often.
Waldeck and Karuan are new for me but I will try them out
When you have some spare time you`re invited here again or maybe Romania, who knows?
afaith,
I agree, for example, I listened Justin TImberlake`s My love so many times and enjoy it so much.
i don’t know what Radiohead’s doing with those others… but well… i forgive you… and…
…how does it make you feel?
What about OK Computer?
No surprises, Exit Music, Paranoid Android ans The Tourist are my favourites… but let’s not put radiohead in the same row with… Justin and… brrr… beyoncé…
What about InRainbows?
and that “how does it make you feel” is from Air. you know… that track that makes my skin feel like shit.
That makes me feel interesting, I thought it`s a woman`s voice..
Sa ma apuc sa te corectez la engleza ?
I wouldn’t call it ‘weird music’, but some not-so-popular artists I listen to are: Imogen Heap, Death Cab for Cutie, The View, Regina Spektor, The Fratellis, Cold War Kids, Fall Out Boy, Billy Talent, Portishead, Mountain Goats, The Raconteurs, Razorlight… and I better stop…
My weird music :
Ada Milea, Air, Anouk, Bjork , Cocorosie, Delerium , Firma, Kosheen , Kumm, Lamb, Massive Attack , Morcheeba, Moloko, Noir Desir, Pendulum , Portishead , The Cure, Tricky, Zero7….
Ace,
be my guest, abia aştept
Lily,
did you listen to Celine Dion in “Tell him” or in “Seduces me”? did Lara Fabian touched you in “Je suis malade” or in “la lettre”? i think that is exactly what you mean with “I have to acknowledge that a music like this coming out of passion rather than out of commercial reasons gives me a certain sense of satisfaction”
